captive orca profiles 123 TANOUK

TANOUK aka YAMOTO was captured in Icelandic waters in October 1989. A male and 3 females were caught. Captures had just been made illegal at that time so the 4 had to wait until their proper papers arrived. Two of the females left and the male Tanouk and a female called Sharkan had to wait and were finally sold to MARINELAND in January 1990. The park already had 2 orca, Kim 2 and Freya. Tensions soon arose as Freya was pregnant so although Sharkan was adopted by the bull Kim, Tanouk and him often fought. As Kim was the resident bull Tanouk was sent to the back pool to live alone. After 5 years of solitary confinement he was sold to Izu Moto Sea Paradise in Japan and was renamed Yamato. He was seriously mishandled on the transfer from France to Japan and the sling and ropes cut into his underside and dorsal fin. (see picture). The park was in search of a female for him and when 5 orca were captured in Taiji in 1997 one of them was sent to be his mate. The female was called Asuka and plans started to be made to make them a breeding pair. Although both animals were mature Asuka never became pregnant. On October 24th 2000, Tanouk died, his cause of death wasn't released, his death wasn't reported, and he just passed into oblivion. He suffered at the hands of man, taken from his family, separated from Sharkan his probable family, kept isolated from the orca at Marineland, hurt during his transportation, could never concieve a calf and his death hardly acknowledged. He was 17 years old.
