"Myrrh is Mine its Bitter perfume breeds a life of gather gloom, Sorrowing, sighing, breathing dying sealed in a cold stone tomb..." Although as the song suggests Myrrh was used as part of the embalming process, yet we know it was also used as a painkiller. When Christ was on the cross they offered him some myrrh mixed with vinegar. We think this would be awful, but myrrh has a painkilling quality to it when mixed with vinegar so the soldier was trying to be nice, at least as nice as he could under the circumstances. Perhaps he too realized what was happening. Today Myrrh is used in medicine and likely was then as well. Here are a few of the ways it is used in medicine today. It helps lower bad cholesterol and raises the good. Thus it is good for your heart. It also helps the blood flow better so is good to help prevent blood clots. It has a calming quality to it to help relieve stress and mental pressures, as does Frankincense. And Myrrh helps lower high blood pressure. It also is known to help as a digestive aid. It helps the metabolism so it is good as a dietary aid, It is good for gum disease and at least in England can be found in toothpaste and mouthwashes. It also helps get rid of bad breath, it helps get rid of sinus problems if taken in combination with Echinacea, and strengthens the immune system and so much more. Isn't it amazing how valuable these gifts the Magi presented to Jesus were? God had them so well chosen for his precious only Son, with such significant meaning, and today they keep discovering new information. As well as, how these discoveries are helpful to our health. However, unlike Frankincense, you can get a toxic level of Myrrh if you take it into large quantities or for too long. This is not true of Frankincense. But as long as moderation is in effect I have decided between frankincense and myrrh one could live a rather healthy life. Myrrh comes in three forms of oil for anointing, a resin which is usually mashed up into a powder and used as an incense in the powder form in some churches and homes. Myrrh was often even more expensive than gold. As we think of the gifts the wise men gave to the Christ child Let us remember to offer Him our very best. The Bible never says how many Wise men there were but through research I discovered this year historians believe they traveled in groups of 12. WOW, the number 12 once again. 12 tribes of Israel, 12 apostles of Christ. Yes, the Magi from the east were indeed rich, and extremely wise. They knew what Christ's life would be by the gifts they gave. God did bless them and touched their lives and their hearts. Kings bowing down to a baby, in a simple house, no palace here, but a humble house in a poor city called Bethlehem. It was known to be a poor place. Yet the Bible tells us in both the old and new Testaments "And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come to a Governor to rule my people Israel" Matthew 2:6 a paraphrase of OT Micah 5:2 Also just an aside. Judah is spelled in my KJV as "Juda" (I took a double take even a triple take on it but that is the spelling) .. in the NIV it has the "h" on the end. Since I was using the KJV to quote from I chose to write it like it was written that is to leave the "h" off. by Connie Hull
